Ok, So I’ve been thinking about getting serious about poker for a while and decided it was time to start now.

Does anybody have a recommended set of books I should read about both online and casino poker?

  2. Do not even think about playing online. The number of collusion softwares are endless and there is even a software that is in the range of 70-80% accurate at predicting the board pre-flop. I personally would stay in a real world job if I were you, but if you would like to play poker for a living then go for it. I would just make sure you play in a live casino rather than online.

  3. You can read a million books on poker and all it’s going to teach you is the rules and some basic strategies. But until you sit down at the table, start fumbling with your chips, bet out of turn, raise when you should have bet, go all in when you should have checked, etc. you ain’t learning poker!

Poker is two games in one:

It’s theory and it’s reality. The books are ALL theory. Live play is ALL reality. This is one of my favorite stories on the difference. 10 guys at a table when somebody from early position raises BIG! He gets one caller. The flop comes A K 6. The guy who raised preflop bets out big and the other guy calls again. The turn card is another K. The aggressive better bets big AGAIN and he gets called. The river is a 2 and the guy goes all in for like his final $300, making his total investment in the hand more than $500. The other guy calls immediately with A J. He’s got A’s and K’s with a J kicker. The big better is going nuts! He’s saying to him: “I REPRESENTED holding big slick! I played the hand FLAWLESSLY! How can you call that with A J?” He goes on like this for like 10 minutes and he finally couldn’t take it any more. He asked him point blank: “Did you think that I had big slick?” The other guy’s answer sums up the REALITY of poker. He said, “I didn’t know what you had. All I knew was that I had a good hand.”

See, the guy lost $500 on the THEORY of poker you read about in books. He’s right. He represented A K. He represented a full house by the river. But no book guarantees you that the other guy is thinking that way or cares what you’re representing. Maybe he’s just some idiot that cannot lay down any pair of aces! We could talk for an hour on why that guy lost that hand, but until you experience it, you’ll not be learning poker.

I’ll say it again: Poker is two games in one and the only way to learn the real game is to play it!

As for online play, I **** online play. You have to understand that the cards are not “dealt” but rather are PROGRAMMED to fall a certain way. The hands are orchestrated for maximum action. BE CAREFUL online my friend. Visit your friendly neighborhood casino.

Be ready to lose a little and learn a lot.

  4. I totally agree with one mans. online play is totally different, and not nearly as fun. I wouldn’t even call the online game “poker”, because it doesn’t resemble the real game at all.

  6. There is a good book for new players that can help you out called the Dynamic Point Count Super Strategy.

It uses a poker point count system for starting hands and ongoing play that will help you learn the game while you play and develop your skills. The book also has some great strategy for both online and live games.

And here is a link to a page full of poker strategy that you can use.

    Good luck!
