Was Casino Royale Ian Flemmings 1st Bond book?

  2. Yes, it was. Published (I believe) in 1959, he took the name “James Bond” from a book on birds (the feathered chirping variety) that he had on his desk.

    Bond is based on a real spy – Sir Sidney Reilly – who was active during the First World War. Fleming said that he only regretted that by comparison to Reilly, Bond was unadventurous.

    Oh, and apparently Fleming’s wife suggested writing a book at first. And on reading it her comment was something like “oh, I didn’t mean a book like that”. :-)

  6. Yes it was Ian Fleming’s first book. However, contrary to what the other user said, it was actually published 1953.
    Then, he published (almost) one book in the series every year for the next 13 years..
