I recently got the Samsung HT-C453N surround sound system for my Panasonic Viera and a PS3 80GB and I’m having a bit of trouble with the surround sound element.
The system I got is below.

I set the system up with the DVD player that comes with the system, all the satellites worked amazingly with it. Me and my dad watched The Book Of Eli on it, and from the beginning we could hear clear cut sounds from the different speakers, the ambient opening was playing on the small rear speakers and everything sounded great.
I set up the PS3 and with a digital optical cable linked it to the DVD player, which is the hub of the surround sound speakers. I noticed, while audio was coming from all speakers, there seemed to be a lack of separation of channels, in that all sounds were coming out of all speakers. Not, for example, a gunshot ricochet from a scene coming out of Rear Left on it’s own, now it just blasts out of all. You’re left with a distinctly less crisp and entertaining sound. I read that setting the PS3 up to a surround sound was simple. We watched a blu-ray, Casino Royale, and the sound again, wasn’t really as clear cut and distributed as we’d have expected. Perhaps it’s how the film was shot but I’m skeptical.
The cable I got is below:

Could anyone offer help or advice, perhaps the cable I need should be of better quality, thanks in advance.
Putting the optical cable from the TV to the reciever/dvd player and having the PS3 sound setting as HDMI still doesn’t appear to cut it, I have it back as I did, it still appears as if there’s less separation but maybe it’s in my head. Thanks a lot anyway!
